Make sure to pick up the latest copy of Goalie’s World Magazine, the one with Roberto Luongo on the cover.
When you get your copy make sure to check out the “Ask Coach” section of the magazine. The first question
featured is one for Andrew Mercer, that was asked by student Mitchell Newman. This question also appears on
the GCG website, as well as the AMHD site. Make sure to send me that burning question as you too could make
find your question in Goalies World magazine.

AMHD Supports Roger’s House
Added June 2008
On June 5th, 2008, AMHD, in conjunction with Houle Sports’ Goalie Day, held a raffle draw for an autographed
Miikka Kiprusoff jersey. AMHD chose Roger’s House as the beneficiary of all funds raised through the ticket sales.
The day was a great success with the raffle raising a total of $324. Our thanks go to M. Scapillati Flooring,
Massage Therapy On-The-Go, Communicare Therapy, David Marcoux of the Calgary Flames and Houle Sports for helping to make
the raffle possible, and special thanks to everyone who bought tickets! The lucky winner of the jersey was
Adam Grantham.
Keep your eyes open for upcoming opportunities to help AMHD continue contributing to such a worthwhile cause.
One Year with the GCG
Added May 2008
My one year anniversary as a member of the Goaltending Consultant Group (GCG) is fast approaching.
Being a member of this prestigious group over the past year has been an incredibly valuable experience.
The coaches involved are all top notch, giving me access to a great source of knowledge. As I go forward,
I am excited about the team we have at GCG and the development opportunities this group can provide for me
and all of my students.
Being involved with GCG has given me the opportunity to participate in some exciting initiatives. I
have done 2 radio interviews on XM Satellite Radio’s Inside Hockey show, and I was recently published in
two separate issues of Goalie’s World Magazine (see more on that below). My membership in this group
gives me the ability to talk year round with some of the game’s best goalie coaches.
Here are some of the benefits you receive from training with a GCG consultant:
- Latest techniques and training methods
- Access to the exclusive GCG pay-site
- Opportunity to receive invitations to the GCG Prospects Camp held each July in New Hampshire
- Train in the same group as many NHL, AHL, NCAA and CHL goalies
- Opportunity to be nominated as a GCG Goalie of the Month and Goalie of the Year

Added May 2008
For those who are not familiar with Goalie’s World Magazine, it is one of the leading authorities of
everything goaltending, with readership in 24 countries around the world. Each month they feature a
section called “Ask The Coach with GCG Coaches.” It is a section similar to what we feature on our website,
where questions I receive are answered on the site.
I was recently featured in two issues as one of the GCG Coaches answering a question – Issue 66 (Feb-March 2008)
and Issue 67 (April-May 2008). I was very excited to see my work published in such a major magazine, and
I look forward to being a contributor for a long time to come. You never know – your question may be the
one that gets chosen for the magazine!

Bantam B1 Capture Gold in Roger’s House Tournament
Added April 2008
The Ottawa Year End Minor Hockey Tournament has been a supporter of Roger’s House through the
donation of profits from the tournament since 2003. Roger’s House is a pediatric palliative care
facility that offers a wide range of services to families with children who suffer from life threatening illnesses.
In this year’s edition of the tournament, the Bantam B1 Blackburn Stingers played five games
undefeated to capture gold, competing within a field of 32 teams.
The weekend started with the team enjoying the spotlight as part of a ceremonial puck drop
hosted by local celebrity Max Keeping of CJOH TV news. A decisive win in the initial game
put the Stingers in the “A” side of the tournament, and set the course for some exciting
hockey match-ups. Along the way, the Stingers played one of their best games of the season
against the top rated team from Pembroke which had allowed only 3 shots on net in its previous
two games. Both teams battled hard with the game tied 1-1 for a good part of the third period,
until the Stinger’s game winning goal was netted by Chris Lacasse-Rufiange with 45 seconds remaining.
The final game was a fast paced 4-1 victory against the St. Laurent Senators.
The team was happy to welcome back their goaltender, Alex Martel, from a wrist injury, no worse
for wear as evidenced by his selection for the tournament MVP honours.
Congratulations to the Stingers for their hard work and continued dedication to the magic of team play.

On March 22nd, AMHD headed to Stockholm, New Jersey to direct a goalie camp. We
were very excited to go on a road trip and have some fun. Andrew Mercer and
AMHD student Curtis Van Allen spent 3 days in northern New Jersey at a first
class facility with 2 North American-sized ice surfaces. The hospitality by all
of the rink staff was well beyond any of our expectations. Curtis and I tested
out the ice on Friday afternoon and found out that it was amazing; at this
point we were getting very anxious to get this camp started. Friday evening
soon came, and Curtis and I were very impressed by the talent level and work
ethic that these goalies possessed. The next two days were no different, with
the hard work paying off and every goalie on the ice showing improvement. By
Sunday afternoon, technical errors were at a minimum and big saves were at a
maximum! By Sunday evening, we couldn't believe our time there was over, and we
were leaving early the next morning. We were very lucky during our time there
as we didn't have super long and crazy days, so we got to squeeze in some time
on the Saturday evening to head in to New York City to check out Times Square,
what an incredible place! Thankfully, the camp reviews have been really
positive, and plans are in the works to get back to the Garden State for
another camp!
Curtis and I want to take this opportunity to thank the goalies, the rink staff
and all of the parents for welcoming us into their community. It was a
fantastic experience made possible by everyone involved. I also want to thank
Skylands Ice World for hosting us, and specifically to their Director of Hockey
Operations, Adam Bergen, for working so hard to make this opportunity happen
for us at AMHD. We're looking forward to the next one!
