Ok guys and girls, here is where you can drop me a line and ask that burning question about goaltending. Remember what my coach once told me “The only stupid question is the one that doesn’t get asked” I’ll take your question to someone smarter than me …..er I mean I’ll answer that question and then post it on this page with your name and age for everyone to see. Only if you want me to post your name that is. So ask away!

Paddle Down

Question: Hello Andrew

When I am on my glove post in a load position should I put my paddle down or have my blade on the ice?

Adam Laderoute

Answer: Great Question Adam

Great question Adam, In this situation I would suggest that if the shooter is just above the goal line and is a good distance away you should have your blade on the ice. This will help you be taller in the net, you will find it easier to slide or t-push if the player decides to pass the puck rather than shoot it on you. This position can allow you to use your hands to help control pucks if the shooter fires it on goal. Let’s not forget the paddle down technique is still very valuable, this position should be used when the player is closer to the goal. In the event of a quick short side walkout or stuff attempt you can use your paddle down technique to get a good seal along the ice with the paddle. This position will give you excellent low coverage and it will help you remain strong on your post in case the player tries to push you and the puck into the net. Let’s review quickly, Stick blade on the ice will help defend against high shots and make you more mobile in the case of a cross ice or centering pass, use this when the player is a little further from your net. Paddle down if the player is close to the net, because of the proximity of the puck it will be tough to get the puck high quickly so the added low coverage is very important in this situation.
