On November 11th 2005, Mack Frere presented Bill Plumridge with an AMHD jersey, making him the first honorary member of Andrew Mercer Hockey Development. We were very happy that this former goalie could attend one of our sessions on this special day. Bill got things underway by blowing the whistle to start the skating portion of the session, and kept things moving quickly to ensure that all of the goalies were working hard. Bill was no stranger to hard work – this former member of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was used to it. Over 60 years ago, Bill was jumping out of planes into enemy territory and fighting in many of the battles for the Liberation of Europe. Not only was he brave enough to jump out of planes into the enemy’s back yard, but he was also talented enough to be a sniper. It was the courage of Bill and the many men and women who fought so that we could live in freedom. Something as simple as a goalie clinic might not have existed if not for the bravery of the many soldiers who fought in WW2. This is why we made Bill an honorary member of our hockey school. He, and many others, gave us a chance to be able to do what we love. Not only is Bill a hero, he is a wonderful grandfather, too.
